19. Yüzyılda Batılı Seyyahların Gözüyle Muş

Abstract

Bu çalışmada iki seyyahın gözlemleri çerçevesinde Muş’un 19. yüzyıl tarihi değerlendirilecektir. İlki Amerikan Misyoner Horatio Southgate’tir. İkincisi ise Keldani kökenli İngiltere vatandaşı Hormuzd Rassamdır. Çalışmanın örneklemini oluşturan eserlerin önemi sırasıyla Tanzimat’ın Muş’ta uygulanmasından öncesi ve sonrasına denk gelmeleridir. Zira Southgate 1837’de, Rassam ise 1877’de Muş’a gitmiştir. Böylece iki farklı dönem üzerinden Muş’un geçirmiş olduğu değişim ve dönüşümler tespit edilerek bunların karşılaştırması yapılabilecektir. Tanzimat’ın kent kalkınmasına dair planlamasının 19. yüzyılın son çeyreğine gelindiğinde Muş’a ne ölçüde yansıdığı, toplumsal ve ekonomik şartların hangi yönde evrildiği çalışmanın cevap arayacağı sorulardandır.

In this study, the history of Muş during the 19th century will be evaluated through the observations of two travelers. The first is American Missionary Horatio Southgate and the second is Hormuzd Rassam, a British citizen of Chaldean origin. The importance of these works for this study is that they coincide respectively before and after the implementation of the Tanzimat in Muş. Because Southgate went to Muş in 1837 and Rassam in 1877. Thus, the changes and transformations Muş has undergone over two different periods will be determined and compared. To what extent the planning of the Tanzimat on urban development was reflected on Muş in the last quarter of the 19th century and in which direction the social and economic conditions evolved are among the questions that the study will seek answers.
