An Econometric Investigation of the Impact of Gender Income Gap on the Gender Gap in Crime: the Case of Arkansas State

Abstract

Buçalışma, cinsiyet hususunu dikkate alarak suçun belirleyicilerini açıklamayıhedeflemektedir. Arkansas eyaleti ve bu eyalet içerisinden 4 şehir rassalolarak seçilmiştir. Standart en küçük kareler ekonometrik tahmin sistemininküme dirençli standart hatalar yöntemiyle kullanılmasıyla elde edilen tahminsonuçları, gelir düzeyinin negatif ve tutuklanma olasılığının suç piyasasınakatılımı pozitif ve istatistiki olarak anlamlı olarak etkilediğinigöstermiştir. Bu çalışmanın en önemli bulgusu erkek ve kadınlar arasında gelirfarkının artmasının erkeklerin, kadınlara göre, suç işleme oranını arttırdığınıgöstermesidir. Sonuçlar literatürden farklı olarak, tutuklanma olasılığınınbelirli bir eşik değerinden sonra, suç oranlarını arttırdığını göstermektedir.

The paper examines the determinants of crime byfocusing on gender issue. We randomly select the state of Arkansas and fourcounties in Arkansas. We estimate econometric models to examine thedeterminants of crime market participation. Estimations based on ordinal leastsquares using clustered robust standard errors imply that probability of arrestaffects the crime market participation. One of the significant contribution ofthe paper is that, according to the estimation results crime gap increases asgender income gap increases explaining the decline in the gender wage gap andgender gap in crime in the last decades. Furthermore the results contrary toliterature, imply that there is threshold level after which increase inprobability of arrest leads to the crime market participation.
