The Problem of Relationship between Philosophy and Religion in Nurettin Topcu

Abstract

We see that both religion scholars and philosophers have made analysis on the relationship between religion and philosophy. In the twentieth century, westernization movements reached its peak, we find that the various ideas emerged around the cited problematic. Nurettin Topcu, as a philosopher and a Muslim, made very important analysis concerning the relations between science and religion. According to our thinker, there cannot conflict between philosophy and religion, on the contrary, philosophy is necessary for being truly pious, if one free from personal passions and in real tend to truth pointing out to the metaphysical area. Therefore, according to Topcu, science, philosophy and religion are situated as steps to receive the knowledge of God. So, in this way, the relation between reason and revelation, philosophy and religion is made compatible.
